A Chappell baby grand piano in a french polished fiddleback mahogany case
This piano was fully restored 8 years ago by one of the very best restorers in the country, and is in fantastic condition for its age.
The iron frame was removed and repainted, all strings and tuning pins replaced, action overhauled, and casework repolished. The cost of this restoration would be well in excess of £5,000
This piano has a modern roller action, making it relatively unusual among baby grands of this size and era - the roller action is significantly better than the more commonly seen simplex actions
The casework is in very good condition for its age owing to the repolishing, with a very good level of shine and only very minor marks in line with a used item
Newly tuned and serviced
The most interesting part of this piano is actually underneath. Scrawled on the bottom of the piano is some graffiti which would appear to have been written on June 6th 1944, the day of the Normandy Landings a.k.a "D-Day". This piano was originally in a large house on the south coast, and it is really incredible to think of the circumstances and thought process that would lead to someone to be hiding under a piano and writing the day for posterity on it. We have seen and found many things inside pianos before but this is definitely one of the most interesting!
