A Chappell concert grand piano in a black ebonised case
This is a fullsize concert grand and has an outstanding tone as a result. Chappell concert grands are extremely well regarded, and in the early 1900s were just as popular on the concert stages of London as their German rivals. It was piano politics and poor business management which led to the demise of the English piano makers, not the quality of their instruments!
The bass on this piano is particularly deep and rich, and arguably better than a Steinway Model D
This piano was the house piano for the Finsbury Park Astoria / Rainbow Theatre which from the 1930s to the 1980s was one of the leading live music venues in London. Literally every artist from the history of rock and pop music performed there, and whilst some groups brought their own touring pianos, this piano would still undoubtedly have been used in performance by many great artists. We have pictures of this piano on stage with Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington and more
The previous owner acquired it from the Rainbow Theatre as they were project managing the restoration and it was due to be thrown in a skip. They had the piano fully internally restored at substantial expense, and it remains in good playing order
The piano was fully restrung with all tuning pins replaced. Iron frame repainted. Felts replaced. Action overhauled
The case has quite a lot of patina in line with its usage so if you are concerned about appearance you may want to consider re french polishing
An amazing piano for a recording studio or someone who wants a full concert grand piano on a budget
