Pianoz.com was delighted to supply an upright piano for the National Theatre's production of The Hot Wing King. While the piano appeared to be a simple stage prop, it actually played a surprisingly important role in the production. Several key moments in the play revolved around the instrument, requiring convincing live piano performances as part of the action on stage. The challenge was that none of the actors involved were trained pianists, yet the production needed the performances to appear completely authentic to the audience.
To solve the problem, we supplied an upright piano equipped with a sophisticated self-playing system that could be operated remotely behind the scenes. This allowed the actors to interact naturally with the instrument while every note was performed in perfect synchronisation. Unlike using a digital keyboard or recorded soundtrack, the system physically moved the keys and action of a real acoustic piano, creating a completely believable visual performance. Audience members could see the keys moving, hear the hammers striking the strings and experience the rich sound of a genuine piano resonating throughout the theatre.
The result was a seamless piece of stagecraft that helped bring the production to life without drawing attention to the technology behind it. Theatre productions often rely on creative technical solutions to create convincing moments on stage, and this project was a perfect example of how modern piano technology can support live performance while preserving the character and sound of a traditional acoustic instrument. We were proud to work with the National Theatre team and contribute to a production where the piano became far more than just part of the set—it became an integral part of the storytelling.
