An extremely rare Broadwood full size 9ft concert grand from 1894
This piano is the last straight-strung concert grand design Broadwood produced, and quite likely the last straight strung concert grand in production from any major manufacturer
This piano is remarkably late for a straight strung design - Steinway had already been producing overstrung pianos for around 20 years by this point, and most other manufacturers had also switched over. This is clearly a deliberate choice on this instrument, the straight stringing gives an incredible evenness of tone across the entire piano which is something that Broadwood later took to the next level with the barless design. This design of piano was in production for just a few years before it was superseded by the Broadwood barless concert grand, which has similar tonal characteristics owing to its lack of frame supports.
The idea of straight strung pianos has received new attention and interest in recent years due to the construction of the Daniel Barenboim/ Maene straight strung concert grand (400,000 euros!). The scale of the Barenboim piano is extremely similar to this piano, and it is highly likely that one of these pianos was studied during the design of the new piano
This piano is believed to have been restored by Broadwood in the 1980s, and remains in very solid playing order. It has very stable tuning, a great smooth action and a rich tone across all registers
The concert grands of Broadwood always receive extra attention to detail and design touches compared to the normal models, and this is one of the most interesting we have seen. In addition to the signature brass lid prop, this piano has ivory on the sides of the keys in addition to the top, making an exceptionally smooth touch. We have never seen this before!
