Outstanding, newly fully restored "golden era" Steinway Model D concert grand piano.
This Model D (8’ 10” or 274cm) was made in Hamburg and shipped to Steinway Hall, London on 23rd March 1923.
This piano was selected to be retained by Steinway and used as part of their concert hire bank throughout the 1920s, an honour reserved only for the very best pianos. During this time it will undoubtedly have appeared on the majority of London concert stages and be played by many great pianists from history.
After retirement from the concert stage, this piano was purchased from Steinway Hall by the billionaire Astor family and remained in their ownership until around 1980, and for many years was in the music room of Hever Castle. The piano can be seen in various archive photographs from the castle and heard on several well known LPs recorded on it.
Following the sale of Hever Castle in the early 1980s the piano was sent to Hamburg Steinway where it was extensively restored, before being purchased personally by a bishop and used in a cathedral until the last few years.
Over the last 12 months this piano has been fully restored back to near-new condition. The piano was disassembled back to individual parts, and every component on the piano has been replaced or restored
The casework has been restored and refinished in high gloss black polyester for a perfect, as-new finish. The audience facing side of the piano bears the concert logo
The keytops are original and have been restored to near perfect condition
The soundboard is original, and has been moisture corrected, shimmed, recrowned and new bridge caps fitted, thus retaining the genuine Steinway tone
The action has been finely regulated and voiced with genuine Steinway components
The piano has been regulated to concert standard and initial voicing completed, ready for final voicing once played in and settled in with the purchaser
A rare, sought after "golden era" instrument, which has the further accolade of being used as a concert instrument in one of the most interesting decades for piano performance, with some of the most revered names from history still active on the concert stage during this time. As close to a new instrument as you can get, whilst still retaining the authentic tonal properties that only mature, aged wood can give.
Outstanding tone and touch as one would expect from what is widely regarded to be the best concert grand ever made - the Hamburg Steinway Model D. Would without doubt be suitable for even the most demanding of virtuoso pianists for home use, a recording studio, or a concert venue looking for something different from a modern instrument
